The spirit of Denude

A Way of Being

To remain awake to beauty, knowledge and virtue.
To fill our time with what gives life meaning.

Charles Baudelaire’s Enivrez-vous is not merely an invitation to intoxication. It is an appeal to resist indifference: to become wholly absorbed in poetry, virtue, beauty and whatever enlarges the experience of being alive.

We return to it as a quiet expression of the Denude ideal. To pay attention. To seek depth over noise. To allow art, architecture, craftsmanship, music, faith, conversation and place to interrupt the ordinary passage of time.

Charles Baudelaire

Enivrez-vous

1864

Read in English

One must always be intoxicated. That is everything; it is the only question. So as not to feel the terrible burden of Time breaking your shoulders and bending you towards the earth, you must become intoxicated without respite.

But with what? With wine, with poetry or with virtue, as you please. But become intoxicated.

And if sometimes, on the steps of a palace, on the green grass of a ditch, in the mournful solitude of your room, you awaken, your intoxication already fading or gone, ask the wind, the wave, the star, the bird, the clock, everything that flees, everything that groans, everything that rolls, everything that sings, everything that speaks; ask what time it is. And the wind, the wave, the star, the bird, the clock will answer: “It is time to become intoxicated! So that you may not be the martyred slaves of Time, become intoxicated; become intoxicated without ceasing! With wine, with poetry or with virtue, as you please.”

Denude translation

Our ideal

For Denude, to become intoxicated is to be wholly awake: to beauty, knowledge, craftsmanship, music, architecture, faith and the lives of others. It is to resist the erosion of attention and to choose depth over indifference.
